Everything you need to know to effectively clean your bag

Leather bags are delicate and can become stained or scratched. Prevention and specific care help to preserve their charm and elegance.

The leather bag is a timeless classic of Italian fashion and is appreciated for its beauty and durability. However, as leather is a natural material, it requires regular care to keep it in perfect condition and prevent hard-to-remove stains. Here are some tips for taking care of your bag!

Do-it-yourself methods for cleaning a leather bag

Various do-it-yourself methods are available for cleaning a leather bag, such as the use of damp cotton cloths, cleansing milk and other natural products. However, the effectiveness of these methods may vary depending on the type of leather and the degree of soiling, so the results may not always be optimal.

  • For small localised stains:  use a cotton ball soaked in cleansing milk to keep the skin shiny and in top condition.
  • Avoid using water: contrary to popular belief, water can damage leather, making it stiff and dull. If you have to remove dust or dirt, use a slightly damp cloth and dry the bag immediately to prevent water from penetrating the material.
  • Cleaning the inside lining: avoid wetting the inside lining of the bag completely, as moisture can damage the material. To remove stains on the lining, only moisten the affected area and clean it with a solution of water and alcohol or diluted mild soap. To dry, fill the bag with blotting paper or neutral paper.
  • Steam cleaning for dark leather bags: if your dark leather bag has a light stain, steam can be a good solution. Start by heating water in a pot until it comes to the boil. Place the bag over the pot at a safe distance, allowing the steam to soften the stain. After a few minutes, gently blot the affected area with a soft cloth or white paper towel, trying to gradually remove the stain. Be sure to avoid any rubbing, as the leather may be damaged.
  • Using egg white for light-coloured leather bags: this is a suitable remedy for skin that is not excessively absorbent or chamois leather. Start by separating the egg white from the yolk and lightly beating it. Before proceeding, test the egg white on a small hidden area of the bag to check its compatibility with the leather. If the test is positive, apply the egg white with a soft cloth to the area to be cleaned. Finally, gently dab the leather and dry with another clean cloth.

How to clean a suede bag

If you own a suede bag, the methods listed above are not suitable, because, besides not working, the products used would ruin such a delicate leather. Therefore, it is a good habit to clean it weekly with a soft-bristled brush or alternatively a simple toothbrush dedicated exclusively for this process (if so, a soft-bristled brush is preferable).

Essential tips for preserving a leather bag

To best preserve your bag, use its original cloth bag. Alternatively, opt for a cotton pillowcase and absolutely avoid plastic bags, as the leather needs to breathe. This simple gesture will help prevent dust accumulation. To maintain the shape of the bag, gently fill it with paper. This will help prevent the bag from squashing or creasing over time. Finally, avoid using newspaper or newspapers, as the ink may stain the lining.
